SPHR UBC is proud to present to you an entire week of solidarity with the struggle for Palestine and the Gaza Freedom March! Even though Palestinians have been oppressed and suppressed for over 60 years, this is the week in which we say "i. am. PALESTINE." We have an awesome line-up of events at the SUB at UBC all week long from 9:30am-5pm every day! Throughout the week, we will have: - Displays and information on various issues surrounding Palestine
- the creation of an SPHR short film titled "i. am. PALESTINE" Join us to tell us what Palestine means to YOU
- a mock wall and the chance to write down how you feel about various issues surrounding the conflict
- access to awesome books, pamphlets and the chance to ask lots of questions.
- SHOP sphr style: kaffiyehs ($12), tshirts ($15), buttons ($1.50), Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner's Guide by Ben White ($20) and our new addition KEYCHAINS to rebuild destroyed homes in Gaza (all proceeds to UNRWA) for $5.00!!
Each day of the week will also have specific events and a specific theme(minus Wednesday, school is not in session as it is Remembrance Day): - Monday Nov. 9th: Israel on TRIAL (International Law & the UN vs. Israel) Join us for a day of information about what International Law says about the occupation and just how many resolutions have been passed against Israel.
Tuesday Nov. 10th: The Israeli Wall of Shame (Exploring Israeli Apartheid) There is going to be a mock Checkpoint throughout the day- visit us to see just what it's like for Palestinians who have to walk through checkpoints every single day- with hundreds of them scattered across the West Bank (starting at 9:30am) * Also join us for Documentary Screenings in the Norm Theatre (in the SUB, a special thanks to Cinema Politica): 12:30pm & 3pm "To See if I'm Smiling" 1:30 & 4pm "Checkpoint" (two showings of each) Thursday Nov. 12th: A Day in the life of Palestine (A Day of culture!) Palestine DOES exist and it exists because of the Palestinian people, who despite being scattered across the globe and without a sovereign state, maintain their culture and heritage. Learn more about their culture in this awesome culture-filled day. With displays of Palestinian clothing and Dabke (Palestinian Dance) at 3pm. Further, cultural clothing and other cultural items will also be available for sale.
***PREMIERE *** Documentary Showing with Cinema Politica of AMERICAN RADICAL: The Trials of Norman Finkelstein at 12:30pm in the Norm Theatre (also located inside the SUB)
Friday Nov 13th: BY ANY WORDS NECESSARY ** A day of Political Art & Resistance ** Featuring: SPOKEN WORD by various people (schedule to come soon) throughout the day on stage inside the SUB Closing Event: 2pm (in the SUB) A staged reading of "MY NAME IS RACHEL CORRIE" featuring Vancouver Poet Mia Amir, and sphr's very own Dina El Kassaby & Fatemah Meghji
