January 13, 2010 - Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) is proud to present “Eyes in Gaza,” a three-week North American speaking tour featuring Dr. Mads Gilbert. An internationally acclaimed doctor, professor, and politician, Dr. Gilbert was one of the only two foreign doctors present in Gaza during the Israeli offensive “Operation Cast Lead.” Recently condemned in the United Nations Human Rights Council’s Goldstone Report, “Operation Cast Lead” resulted in the deaths of more than 1400 Palestinians and left more than 5000 Gazans injured. The Report also found that the Israeli military committed war crimes during Operation Cast Lead. Approximately one year after the attack on Gaza, and in the height of the controversy over the Goldstone Report, Dr. Gilbert embarks on a North American journey across 15 different university campuses to describe and share his unique experience with war and human misery in Gaza. The tour will last from January 18 to February 5, 2010.
Dr. Gilbert was granted permission to enter Gaza on behalf of the Norwegian Aid Committee, a humanitarian organization that works mainly with health care issues worldwide. Under the Israeli attacks, Dr. Gilbert worked days and nights at the busy and over-crowded Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza. While Gaza was under siege with no media or medical assistance allowed entry, Dr. Gilbert emerged as the mainstream face in keeping the world informed of the ongoing atrocities. His testimonies were broadcast worldwide on ABC, Al-Jazeera, BBC, CBS, CNN and more.
Furthermore, Dr. Gilbert recently published a new book in 2009, Øyne i Gaza (“Eyes in Gaza”) with Dr. Erik Fosse, the other foreign doctor who was permitted into Gaza during the offensive. Eyes in Gaza has already been released in Norwegian and will soon be published in English. Before the English release of Eyes in Gaza , SPHR will host Dr. Gilbert on a North American tour to share his experiences and tell the often-overlooked stories of Palestinians who suffered under Israeli siege and shelling in Gaza.
