Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) National is proud to announce its official endorsement of the historic Gaza Freedom March that is scheduled for January 1st, 2010 on the Erez Crossing. SPHR will be joining other social justice organizations such as Code Pink, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East (CJPME), the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and the many more expected to join the cause. Since 2007, the Palestinian people of Gaza have been under a siege imposed by the Israeli government that is severely limiting their access to basic food supply, clean water and limiting their freedom of movement. The Israeli blockade has also perpetrated a sanitation crisis by not allowing enough electricity and fuel into the territory to maintain necessary infrastructure, basic social services and businesses. What’s more, Israel has orchestrated an armed assault on the Gaza Strip last January 2009 causing the death of over 1500 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injuring over 5000 civilians. Until this day, Gaza struggles for survival under siege and through the devastation following Israel’s “war crimes”, as they are denounced by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the United Nations. In response, in January 2010, the international community, including students, professors, peace activists and members of diverse religious institutions, will unite to break the siege on Gaza in an historic attempt to call for the end of the illegal Israeli occupation and violations of humanitarian rights on Palestinian territories once and for all. Together, they will march across the Erez Crossing to Gaza and demand that international law and conventions be respected by the Israeli state. “The march is inspired by decades of nonviolent Palestinian resistance from the mass popular uprising of the first Intifada to the West Bank villagers currently resisting the land grab of Israel's annexationist wall. It draws inspiration from the international volunteers who have stood by Palestinian farmers harvesting their crops, from the crews on the vessels who have challenged the Gaza blockade by sea, and from the drivers of the convoys who have delivered humanitarian aid to Gaza”. Thousands holding foreign passports will come together and stand to represent the Palestinian people by risking their lives in denouncing Israel’s violations of Palestinian human rights right at the border. SPHR invites you to join the march to nourish its strength and effectiveness in the name of justice. In order for this historic march to reach its full potential and successfully end the siege, we need YOU to participate.
