Two excellent speakers, Israeli activist Yoana Gonen and Palestinian professor and poet Sami Kilani will be around for an illuminating discussion on different aspects of the Occupation and Palestinian human rights.

Backgorund: The Human Rights Working Group, Radlaw, the Muslim Law Students Association, Young Jews for Social Justice, and the Arab Law Students Association have collaborated to bring Palestinian Human Rights Week to the Faculty of Law.

Sami Kilani
Ph.D. Fellow
Sami Al-Kilani was a physics and science education professor at An Najah National University in Nablus, Palestine and served as director of public relations and director of continuing education at An Najah University. He was the founding Director of the An Najah Community Service Center in Nablus. In his spare time, Sami remains a well known peace activist, poet and writer, and has recently published another book of poetry. Today, Sami is at McGill University pursuing his PhD in Social Work.

Sami is widely published in the field of education and literature; he is politically active in number of organizations: the Palestinian National Council (since 1996), the Palestinian Democratic Union (FIDA), the Palestinian Writers Union, the Child Cultural Center, and Tamer Institution for Community Education. He was the cofounder and member of Israeli-Palestinian Dialogue Group in Nablus and West Jerusalem from 1992 and 1998; and serve as a delegate in the Middle East Peace Talks, Madrid Conference in 1991 and Washington D.C Bilateral Talks between 1991 and 1993.

Yoana Gonen
Yoana Gonen is an Israeli activist, journalist and media strategy consultant, and holds a master's degree in conflict resolution and management from Brandeis University. She is currently the spokesperson for Hadash (the Israeli Jewish-Arab Socialist Party).

Prior to that she worked as a journalist and columnist for various Israeli newspapers, among them Calcalist, Nana, Ha'aretz and Time Out Tel Aviv; and as a media strategy consultant for social change organizations (such as the organization of the unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev, Courage to Refuse, The Tel Aviv University Students, New Family, and others).

Yoana has been a social change and queer activist for the past 15 years. She was one of the founders of Kvisa Shchora (Black Laundry, Israeli Queers against the occupation and for social change) in 2001 and has been a member of queer groups such as Queerhana and Paradildo, and feminist groups such as the Coalition of Women for Just Peace.
