Poetry night with Suheir. Amazing words with hip-hop beat. Come check it out.
Event : Poetry Performance by Suheir Hammad
Time: Monday Mar 30, 2009 @ 8PM ( Doors open @ 7pm)
Location: Club Lambi ( 4465 St-Laurent). Montreal
Backgorund: Born in Jordan but hailing from Brooklyn, Suheir has won numerous awards, including a TONY Award for her performance on Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry Jam on Broadway in 2003. Her publications include the collections "Born Palestinian, Born Black" (1996), "ZataarDiva" (2006), and, most recently, "Breaking Poems" (2008).
Beat by hip-hop beat, Palestinian-American poet Suheir Hammad deconstructs the structures of patriarchy and oppression that relegate visible minorities to the margins of the North American socio-cultural sphere. Braiding together the narratives of Native Americans, Arab/ Arab-Americans, Hispanic-Americans and African-Americans, Suheir redefines identity as a category unbounded by ethnicity, language or descent. Instead, her words like sand and mortar construct an alternate community of the subjugated and disenfranchised.
