At this moment in time when the whole world seems to be more interested in the staged Israeli partial withdrawal from Gaza (while it still de facto occupies it, bombs it at will, and controls all access to it), we invite you to a first hand testimony directly from Palestine by two committed and prominent activists, Jeff Halper and Amneh Badran.
Monday, October 24, 7:15 PM Room R-M130, UQAM, 315 Ste-Catherine East (Berri-UQAM metro) in English with French simultaneous translation
Security or Human Rights Abuse? by Jeff Halper - Coordinating Director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) The Wall: Imprisoning a Nation! by Amneh Badran - Director of the Jerusalem Center for Women (outgoing) Jeff Halper Defining himself as an "engaged anthropologist", Jeff Halper is the Coordinating Director of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD). Through its resistance to the demolition of Palestinian homes and other manifestations of the occupation, including the rebuilding of demolished homes as acts of political solidarity, ICAHD has developed a relationship of trust and close cooperation with Palestinian organizations. Believing that civil society and governmental forces must be mobilized if a just peace is to emerge in Israel/Palestine, Jeff also directs ICAHD?s extensive program of international advocacy. His popular book Obstacles to Peace is to be followed by a forthcoming work: An Israeli in Palestine: Reframing the Israel-Palestine Conflict (Pluto Press). In addition to his three decades of involvement with the Israeli peace movement since coming to Israel from the US, Jeff has been active on issues of social justice within Israel and has written extensively on Israeli society. For ten years, he worked in Jerusalem?s inner-city neighborhoods where he helped initiate the Ohel social protest movement of working-class Mizrahi Jews. He has also served as the Chairman of the Israeli Committee for Ethiopian Jews. Amneh Daoud Badran is the former director of the Jerusalem Center for Women (till Sept. 2005), a non-governmental organization committed to the protection of human rights, the advancement of women?s rights, and the realization of a Palestinian ? Israeli peace based on justice. Through work experience and political activism Ms. Badran has been involved in programs and campaigns aiming for building a sustainable peace between equals. Ms. Badran supervised numerous projects and activities that focus on conflict resolution, coalition building, human rights, and nonviolent resistance to Israeli occupation. Prior to her appointment at the JCW, Ms. Badran worked for the Palestinian Federation of Women Action Committees. She holds an MA in Middle Eastern Politics from Exeter University in the UK and is currently back as a full time Ph.D. politics student there.
