SPHR Co-Sponsored Events
Montreal: May 11 to 15: Commemorating the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) PDF Print E-mail
Events - SPHR Co-Sponsored Events

A week of events in solidarity with Palestine and in commemoration of 62 years since the Nakba in 1948 as well as the ongoing Nakba taking place today in Palestine.

Between 1948 and 1949, over 750,000 Palestinians, or 75% of the indigenous population, were forcibly expelled from their homes and lands in Palestine. During this time Zionist forces supported by the British colonial regime destroyed over 500 Arab villages and towns in an attempt to erase the memory of Palestine and ethnically cleanse the indigenous Palestinian population.

The Nakba or catastrophe remains as the central issue of the struggle of the Palestinian people. Today, over 5 million Palestinian refugees make up the international Diaspora and remain in refugee camps and in countries around the world, unable to return to their lands and homes. 62 years later, we mark this day not only to commemorate the Nakba of 1948, but also to raise awareness about the fact that the Nakba continues everyday. Examples of the ongoing Nakba include the illegal settlement expansions and expulsions of Palestinian residents in East Jerusalem, the impacts and forced displacement of Palestinians by the construction of the illegal apartheid wall in the West Bank, or the situation in the Gaza Strip, where over 1 million Palestinians have been displaced in due to Israel’s aggressions and are now trapped by Israel's ongoing siege.

We invite all Montrealers to join us for a week of cultural events, actions, and educational events to commemorate 62 years of the ongoing Nakba and to demand the right of return and justice for Palestinians in Palestine and around the world.

List of events:

1. Tuesday May 11 & Wednesday May 12: Palestinian Perspectives VI: Remembering the Nakba (1948)

Over their Dead Bodies: Tantura
Arab Lotfy – Egypt-Lebanon 2008
112 min. – eng. subt.

Director: Arab Lotfy

Egypt-Lebanon, 2008 – 113 minutes
This film explores testimonies from surviving residents of Tantura, a Palestinian village just south of Haifa, which was “cleansed” by Jewish Haganah forces in May 1948. Many Palestinians were killed and hundreds were imprisoned. Those who survived fled to the nearby village of Fureidis, which was spared destruction when Jewish residents of nearby towns interceded on its behalf. Other survivors became refugees in the West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.

* May 12 9pm
(admission: 11$ / 8$ for youth and elders)

Zahra – Mohammad Bakri, Palestine 2009 – original arabic version, fr. Subt.

Zahra, a Palestinian native of a village in Galilee, is the central character in this documentary, which tells the story, through a lyrical narrative, of how the Palestinian population of Israel has been radically transformed from a majority to a disenfranchised minority in their own homeland.

Arthur Balfour and Me – Charlotte Cornic, U.K. 2007 – 11 min. – fr. Subt.

This is a personal story about how the actions of a politician born in 1848 on a sumptuous family estate in Scotland continues to affect the life of a young woman born in a refugee camp in Lebanon in 1971 and now seeking asylum in Glasgow.

Strangers in my Home – Sahera Dirbas, Palestine 2007 – 37 min.

original arabic, hebrew, english version, eng. subt.

The story of eight Palestinian families who have been turned into refugees in their own city. After forty years they recall the events that occurred in the Moghrabi Quarter of Jerusalem during the war of 1967. Each family goes to West Jerusalem to see the house which was taken from them in 1948.

Join us in our simulated refugee tent in Parc Lafontaine for a cup of tea or coffee and listen to the stories of Palestinians who lived through the Catastrophe of 1948 and are still affected by Israel’s ongoing policies of illegal land expropriation, colonization, occupation and apartheid. Learn about the international movement for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israeli apartheid that aims to end the ongoing Nakba.

In the simulated refugee tent, we will also host an exhibition of photos and artwork depicting the Nakba, and feature the traditional music of the oud.

METTONS FIN AU BLOCUS DE GAZA ! BOYCOTTONS L’APARTHEID ISRAÉLIEN! PDF Print E-mail

METTONS FIN AU BLOCUS DE GAZA!
Manifestation
samedi le 16 janvier
13h

Je me souviens !

END THE SIEGE OF GAZA!
Rally and March
Saturday January 16
1pm
Corner Peel and Rene-Levesque
Metro Peel or Bonaventure

This demonstration is organized by the Coalition for Justice and Peace in Palestine (CJPP). Tadamon! and Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR) encourage Montrealers to attend.

END THE SIEGE OF GAZA! BOYCOTT ISRAELI APARTHEID!

Last year we witnessed the massacre of the population of Gaza by the Israeli army through its “Operation Cast Lead.”  More than 1400 Gazans were killed, the majority of whom were civilians, including 400 children.  More than 5000 Gazans were injured, and almost all of the essential infrastructure of Gaza was destroyed.

We must remember Gaza! At the beginning of 2010, Gaza's inhabitants continue to be robbed of their fundamental human rights by Israel’s illegal siege, imposed since 2006.

Israel is acting with complete impunity and with the complicity of the international community. Egypt collaborated with Israel by refusing the 1360 people who marched in the Gaza Freedom March entry to Gaza to bring much-needed aid and to demonstrate their solidarity.  At the UN, Canada voted against the Goldstone report, and the Canadian government unconditionally supports Israel’s regular violations of international law.

In supporting this demonstration for Gaza, Tadamon and Solidarity for Palestinien Human Rights call on people of conscience to join the campaign for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against the state of Israel until it respects international law and ends its apartheid system, namely by :

- ending its cruel blockade of Gaza
- ending its illegal occupation and colonisation of Palestinian lands
- dismantling its illegal apartheid wall
- respecting the right of Palestinian refugees to return home
- respecting the right of Palestinians living within Israel to full equality.

END THE SIEGE OF GAZA! BOYCOTT ISRAELI APARTHEID!
