The Freedom of Expression Institute has been following with interest
the events surrounding the banning of the use of the term “Israeli
Apartheid” on the McMaster University campus. While such incidents no
longer shock us, we are still not beyond being disgusted when they do
occur.
That we live in dangerous times is confirmed by the manner in which a
number of universities in the USA routinely violate academic freedom
and freedom of expression on their campuses. It is concerning that this
is becoming a trend in Canada as well.
We, students at South Africa’s University of the Witwatersrand, consider the banning of the phrase “Israeli Apartheid” a tactic similar to one that the erstwhile apartheid regime of South Africa employed and current Apartheid Israel practices; devices that attempt to silence the voices of justice and truth through intimidation and coercion.
South Africans who were part of the liberation struggle unequivocally understand Israel to be an Apartied State – in fact, some have even gone further to regard apartheid Israel worse than apartheid South Africa.
Rights & Responsibilities in Political Discussion on Campus: Who Speaks for McMaster?
A Public Forum Friday, February 29, 2008 at 10:00am
Free buses will be leaving to McMaster from University of Toronto, Ryerson University and York University to attend this important meeting. The forum will begin at 10am with a rally immediately afterwards, and buses will return to Toronto around 2pm. All are welcome (you don’t need to be a university student) and transportation is free. Please RSVP as below.
Join Ryerson students in solidarity on Tuesday, February 26 at NOON outside the Cafeteria at the University to show our opposition to such acts.
Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights stands shoulder to shoulder with our Black brothers and sisters at Ryerson University who have suffered from a terrorist attack on the offices of the East African Students Group (EAST).
The arson attack targeted the bulletin board of EAST witch carried posters and information against Racisim, Islamophobia, and Military Occupation. This attack follows the re-activation in Canada of the Jewish Defense League (JDL), the only Jewish group labeled by the FBI as a "right-wing terrorist group." On February 4th at Ryesron University during events held by Black and Palestinian students, around 20 JDL members harassed students attending the lecture without police interference. This sent a message to the JDL and other Jewish supremacist individuals that it is acceptable to target visible minorities in our cities. Furthermore, this decision by the Toronto police to stand-by idly only emboldened those who committed this terrorist action a week later.
